‘Stand By Me’ actor Jerry O’Connell reveals his surprising real birth name

Jerry O’Connell explained that Jerry is not his real name, but that “there was always a Jerry” in his mind.
During a recent appearance “Live with Kelly and Mark” The 52-year-old actor and his mother, Linda, shared the actor’s real name and why he decided to use the name Jerry.
“His real name is Michael Jeremiah Witkowski O’Connell,” his mother explained. “His grandfather Jeremiah and our favorite cousin Jerry DeScipio.”
Although his birth name is Michael, the actor shared that he has “always been a Jerry” and that he often “looks at myself and says, ‘Yeah, I’m a Jerry. I don’t actually look like a Michael.'”

The actor recently ruffled feathers in March when he shared on Bill Maher’s podcast that his wife and daughters had made physical contact with him following the 2024 presidential election, suggesting that “there was no planning” and that “there needs to be a primary.”

Later, in the same podcast, he found himself in trouble again when he made comments about his daughters’ partying and vaping.
O’Connell stated that her 16-year-old daughters “are starting to go out and socialize,” adding, “They’re going to party because they’re nepo babies in Los Angeles.” When Kennedy suggested she stop her daughters’ vaping, O’Connell explained that was easier said than done.

“It’s addicting,” he said. “So, isn’t it a substitute for another e-cigarette? Instead of saying, ‘It’s not the e-cigarette’s fault,’ shouldn’t I be talking to them about addiction and how it can lead to lifelong addiction?”
Many listeners took issue with the actor’s statements, with one writing: “Get rid of vaping. Listen to your friend. Also…protect your daughters.”

“Poor Jerry. Good guy. Wants an easy life. Too scared of confrontation and reaction from critics, public and people at home,” another user wrote.

“I struggled with nicotine for decades, I struggled with it. I had to be hypnotized. I haven’t smoked in about 14 years,” he said. “My wife said she wouldn’t touch me if I smoked. This lasted about two months. In the meantime, there was no contact. My wife said, ‘I won’t touch you until you quit smoking.’ I thought it was a joke, and after about two weeks there was no physical contact.”
