Keir Starmer dealt ultimate blow after elections humiliation | Politics | News

Voters are abandoning the Labor Government because three in four people think the government has little or no respect for them, according to a major new study. Just three in 10 people think Labor respects hard-working citizens, while 43% say the same of Reform UK. The research, conducted by University College London’s “policy laboratory” and More in Common, found that two in three people say the cost of living is one of the most important issues facing the country. But only three in 10 say Sir Keir Starmer is making it a priority. 28 per cent say Labor respects people who love their country, while 54 per cent say they do not.

The groups most likely to think people respect Labor are the wealthy (58%), asylum seekers (50%), immigrants (48%) and big business (47%). The main reason why Britons think the Government is disrespectful is because they believe politicians are serving their own interests and failing to represent ordinary people.

42 percent say the Government does not respect them because its members look out for their own interests rather than the interests of people like them.

Marc Stears, director of UCL’s policy laboratory, said: “The gap between the governed and the governed has been widening for decades, and this new poll shows it continues to widen. Less than two years ago, millions of people hoped that the election of a Labor government would turn things around, and as we saw overnight, many were clearly disappointed by what followed. “The challenge the government now faces could not be starker: convince the public that they understand and appreciate the challenges they face or risk.” More extreme forces are taking over on the right.”

Luke Tryl, director of More in Common, commented on research showing that only 19% of people felt the government respected them “quite a lot” or “a lot”, and warned: “Voter anger stems from a sense of ‘disrespect’ from a government that is self-serving and unrepresentative of ordinary people.”

Sir Keir’s Government is now seen as more chaotic than the Conservatives under Rishi Sunak. Half describe the current Labor Government as “chaotic” and just 26% say the same about the last Conservative administration.

The poll found that many people thought Reformation did not respect immigrants (68%), asylum seekers (64%), transgender people (61%) and ethnic minorities (60%).

The Green Party is most likely to have no respect for the Conservative Party (53%), big business (49%), the wealthy (46%) and business owners (45%).

Conservative Leader Kevin Hollinrake said: “Keir Starmer came into office without a plan because he didn’t support anything. They made the wrong decisions like taxing jobs, cutting Winter Fuel Payments and letting criminals out of prison early. Voters are right to be disrespected, Labor made promises it has no intention of keeping.”
