Adam Yates: Injured British cyclist out of Giro d’Italia after 30-rider crash

Britain’s Adam Yates has been ruled out of the Giro d’Italia after suffering a concussion. Serious accident on Saturday.

Yates, 33, crashed into a barrier at high speed in a major crash involving around 30 drivers on a wet landing. Two of his teammates were hospitalized with fractures.

Although Yates managed to finish the stage against Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria, he lost 14 minutes to the leaders.

His team UAE Team Emirates-XRG said:, external: “Adam Yates suffered severe abrasions and a laceration to his left ear.

“He was initially evaluated at the scene for a concussion and was cleared to continue, but later showed symptoms of delayed concussion. He will not progress to stage three.”

This is the first Grand Tour in which Yates has protested that he cannot finish. He has seven top-10 finishes overall in Grand Tour races to his name.

Teammates Australian Jay Vine and Spaniard Marc Soler were seriously injured in the accident. Vine suffered a concussion and a broken elbow, while Soler suffered a broken pelvis.

The team said Yates, Vine and Soler will be monitored by medical staff in the coming days before returning home to recover.

Yates’ twin brother Simon won the Giro last year.

Uruguayan Guillermo Silva Thomas became the leader after two stages in this year’s race.
