Two arrested over arson attack at former synagogue in east London | UK news

Counter-terrorism officers investigating an arson attack at a former synagogue in east London have detained two people.
A 45-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were arrested and taken into police custody on Sunday on suspicion of arson conspiracy.
Police and fire crews were called to a fire at the former East London Central Synagogue in Whitechapel at 5.16am on Tuesday. There was minor damage to the door and lock at the front of the building. No one was injured. The Metropolitan police said initial CCTV footage showed the fire was started deliberately.
The old synagogue was in the process of being sold to a local Somali Muslim organization.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of London’s counter-terrorism police, said: “Today’s arrests are a significant step in our investigation into this attack and our inquiries continue.
“Our goal remains to arrest and charge those responsible for arson attacks and other incidents targeting Jewish, Israeli and Iranian sites in recent weeks. We will not tolerate these hateful attacks on communities.”
Det Supt Oliver Richter, who leads the force in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said: “This attack took place at a synagogue that was about to be sold to a local Somali Muslim organisation, and I know that those of all faiths in the local area feel they have been targeted and collectively condemn this appalling act.
“Our work to engage and reassure all communities affected by recent events continues and, as always, we want to hear any fears or concerns so we can address them.”
The Met this week announced a new community protection team of 100 extra officers who will provide a more visible, intelligence-led and coordinated presence focused on protecting Jewish communities in London.
The Met said that following the attack on ambulances operated by the Jewish volunteer group Hatzola in March and several other arson attacks and incidents, a total of 33 people were arrested as part of related counter-terrorism investigations. A criminal complaint was filed against 8 of them.
