UP Elections 2027: BJP begins major poll push, targets 61 seats lost in last three elections with booth outreach & beneficiary mapping

After Sunday’s cabinet meeting, the BJP in UP has started early preparations for next year’s assembly elections. A meeting of BJP leaders is expected to be held any time after Tuesday, after the swearing-in ceremony of the Assam Government under new state president Pankaj Choudhary is over.

Sources told ET that Chaudhary had asked party leaders to focus on 61 assembly seats in the initial phase, but failed to win the last three assembly elections in 2012, 2017 and 2022.

First, an information gathering exercise will be carried out and then a strategy will be developed on how the party can benefit from cadre resources for these seats. Out of 61 seats, maximum 22 are in Eastern UP region like Azamgarh, Mau, Jaunpur, Ghazipur and Mirzapur. Around 13 seats fell in West UP district in Saharanpur, Moradabad and Bijnor.

In the 2022 assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party won 27 out of 35 seats in these two districts.

However, the BJP won a few seats like Suar, Rampur and Kundarki in the subsequent by-polls.

Moreover, out of the remaining eight seats in these two districts, three went to SP’s ally SBSP, two to BJP’s allies Apna Dal and Nishad Party and one to BSP.
SBSP is now an ally of the BJP and its leader Om Prakash Rajbhar is a minister in the Yogi government. State BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary is also focusing on mobilizing booth-level workers ahead of the elections. Choudhary mandated monthly meetings from the booth to the district level. The workers at the booth level will hold a meeting every month after listening to PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program and inform the party leadership about the developments. Booth staff will also visit households to see if they are eligible for government schemes and offer assistance accordingly.

The state currently does not have a full-time party in charge. Sources told ET that a reshuffle in the national office holders team under Nitin Nabin will be made any time next week, following which a state in-charge will be appointed.
