When former PM Indira Gandhi donated her gold jewellery

Amid the ongoing political debate over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal urging citizens to reduce their gold purchases to preserve foreign exchange, an old photo of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi donating her jewelery has resurfaced on the internet and gone viral once again.

The image dates back to one of the most difficult periods in the history of independent India, the India-China war of 1962.

Why Did Indira Gandhi Donate Her Jewelry?

In October and November 1962, India faced a major military challenge when Chinese troops launched incursions into various border areas, including Ladakh and the North-East Frontier Agency (now Arunachal Pradesh). The country was militarily underprepared, and the government urgently needed popular support for its war effort.

The government, then led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, launched a nationwide campaign asking citizens to contribute money, woolen and gold to strengthen the country’s defense preparedness. Public messages and radio appeals encouraged Indian women in particular to donate jewelery for the national cause.

Responding to the call, Indira Gandhi, then Nehru’s daughter and later Prime Minister, donated her personal jewels to national relief efforts. His contribution later became one of the most remembered symbols of wartime sacrifice.
Reportedly, Indira Gandhi donated around 367 grams of gold jewelery to the national relief fund during the 1962 war.
Gold Control Act During his time as prime minister, he imposed sweeping restrictions on gold ownership and trade in the country. Within the scope of the policy, banks were instructed to take out gold loans, while forward trading in gold was completely banned. By 1963, the production of jewelry with a purity of more than 14 carats was made a punishable crime.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has hit back at opposition parties that criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest call for austerity amid the ongoing West Asian conflict, accusing them of fear-mongering and indulging in negative politics.

The ruling party’s reaction came after opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal, attacked Modi’s remarks and described them as “evidence of failure”.

Modi on Sunday appealed to citizens to use fuel prudently and consider postponing non-essential expenses such as gold purchases and foreign travel. He said the government was taking steps to protect people from the economic consequences of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
