Over 100 Labour MPs rally behind Starmer as they declare ‘this is no time for a leadership contest’

More than 100 Labor MPs have publicly declared their unwavering support for Sir Keir Starmer, signing a letter stressing that “now is not the time for a leadership contest” and calling on the party to focus its efforts on rebuilding voters’ trust.

This significant show of unity comes at a time when Labor is struggling with deep internal divisions; At least 80 MPs express their desire for the party leader to resign after recent election disappointments.

A total of 112 Labor MPs have officially pledged their support to Sir Keir, citing the critical need for collective action and a united front “to deliver the change the country needs”.

Their intervention comes at a crucial juncture for the party, whose stance is being questioned following a series of difficult results at the ballot box.

The letter, circulated among the parliamentary party, directly addresses these setbacks and the way forward, and aims to quell dissent and encourage harmony.

He writes: “We received devastatingly difficult election results last week. It shows we have a tough job ahead of us to win back voters’ trust. That work needs to start today, working together to deliver the change the country needs. We must focus on that. Now is not the time for a leadership race.”

The letter comes as pressure mounts on Starmer amid speculation of a leadership battle.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting, a widely-held leadership hopeful, is expected to meet Starmer on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy also gave full support to Starmer.

He told reporters outside Downing Street on Tuesday: “(The Prime Minister) was elected less than two years ago with a five-year mandate from the British people.

“I have his full support and I say to my colleagues, look, let’s take a step back. Take a breath.”
