Squadron in Australia says group was treated ‘really badly’ after being detained by Israel

All of the activists traveling on the Global Sumud Flotilla who were detained by Israeli authorities this week have been released and are currently in Istanbul.

In the statement made by the fleet’s Australian delegation, it was stated that 428 people, including 11 Australians, were released after being detained for approximately 80 hours. The Australians are being examined at a hospital and will meet with lawyers in the coming days before returning to Australia.

Zack SchofieldOne of the Australians on board said the group were jailed and “really mistreated”:

double quotesMost of us haven’t eaten for days. We couldn’t get water for two days. … But this is nothing compared to what happens to Palestinians every day in the occupied territories. …

The message to our Australian government is that they must cut ties with Israel. We need to cancel the alliance, stop sending them weapons parts, stop giving them political support.

Plibersek says Ben-Gvir’s behavior is ‘shameful’ as Greens call for stronger federal response

Tanya Plibersek, The social services minister said the behavior was: Itamar Ben Gvir It was “embarrassing” and “disgraceful”.

Speaking to RN Breakfast, Plibersek said:

double quotesI think this is absolutely disgraceful behaviour, and I am very pleased to say that the Minister of Foreign Affairs has put this to the Israeli government in the strongest terms. Our Australian ambassador in Israel has made it clear that this behavior by the Australian government is acceptable, completely unacceptable.

Greens senator Nick McKim He went a step further and told RN:

double quotesThis is disgusting treatment of people by a high-ranking official of the Israeli government. People are humiliated. Human rights are being violated. This is actually a form of torture. And the simple truth is that Israel is now a rogue state. They kidnap people, including Australian citizens, from international waters offshore. This is actually an act of piracy…

So this requires the strongest reaction from our prime minister and our foreign minister. A much, much stronger response than anything they’ve ever offered.
