NBA rocked as Grizzlies star Brandon Clarke dies suddenly at 29… a month after being arrested on drug charges

It was announced that Memphis Grizzlies star Brandon Clarke passed away at the age of 29.

The Grizzlies confirmed Clarke’s sudden death in a heartbreaking statement on Tuesday, describing him as an “extraordinary” member of the Memphis community.

“We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the statement reads. ‘Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the Memphis community will not be forgotten.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this difficult time.’

While the cause of death has not yet been confirmed, the Los Angeles store NBC4 It was revealed that Clarke’s death was being investigated as a possible overdose.

The Canadian-American actor was found dead in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles County, after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 medical emergency call shortly after 5pm local time on Monday.

Clarke, who was photographed at his sister’s wedding in 2024, died four months before his 30th birthday.

Medical teams arriving at the scene determined that the person died due to the presence of drug materials in the house.

Clarke, who was selected 25th overall by Memphis in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft, passed away just four months before his 30th birthday.

His tragic death came a month after his arrest in Arkansas on charges of speeding and trafficking in a controlled substance.

The Cross County Sheriff’s Department noted that he was booked into jail on Wednesday, April 1, on charges of improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing and speeding, and trafficking in a controlled substance.

Injuries had limited the Grizzlies’ 6-foot-10 forward to just two games this season in a frustrating year, and Memphis recently cut him for the remainder of this season.

Clarke was in his seventh season at Gonzaga. He initially started 26 games while recovering from surgery on his right knee, then missed 73 games and suffered a right calf injury for the last 46 games.

In one of his latest social media posts, the Memphis player commented on a video his barber, whose Instagram handle is @california_kingdoc, shared three days ago.

Less than two days ago he had replied to his barber: ‘My love brother!’

Clarke, who is in his seventh season in Memphis, was arrested last month on charges including speeding and controlled substance trafficking.

Tributes poured in for Clarke following his death, including from NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

“We were devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke,” Silver said in a statement. One of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with tremendous passion and courage.

‘Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.’

Basketball fans also paid tribute to Clarke on social media.

‘RIP Brandon Clarke,’ one user commented. ‘You’re so young, my friend. Our condolences to his family, the Grizzlies and everyone who knew him. This hurts.’

‘What happened? No? “So young and energetic,” said another. ‘I am sending strength to his loved ones and family’

While a third put: ‘Wow RIP. It’s always so sad and shocking when someone dies so young. Prayers for his friends and family’.

Many NBA teams, including the Golden State Warriors, also paid tribute to Clarke.

“We send our condolences to Brandon Clarke’s family, friends and the entire @memgrizz organization,” the Warriors said on X.
