Russia burning as Ukraine launches massive attack on Putin’s ‘Amazon’ | World | News
A massive drone strike reportedly launched by Ukraine set fire to another warehouse owned by Wildberries, often referred to as Russia’s Amazon. It is said that one of the largest oil refineries in Russia’s Ryazan region was also targeted in the night attack.
Local authorities confirmed a “major” drone strike, and residents reported multiple explosions and large fires across the city. The reported strike is the latest in what appears to be a sustained campaign by Ukraine targeting the Russian e-commerce giant, which saw several warehouse facilities attacked last week. Ryazan regional governor Pavel Malkov said the city suffered a “massive” drone attack early on Wednesday. He said: “There is a massive drone attack in Ryazan and air defense systems are activated. A fire broke out on the territory of one of the enterprises.” Emergency services were sent to the scene and Mr Malkov later said there were “fires in industrial areas”.
He added that 6 people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The governor did not specify which areas were hit.
But local residents reported hearing a series of explosions before posting photos and videos online showing fires in multiple locations.
Residents claimed that the Ryazan Oil Refinery and the Wildberries warehouse complex were hit, but these reports have not been independently verified.
Ryazan Oil Refinery is one of the largest oil processing facilities in Russia. Owned by Rosneft, the facility produces more than 17.1 million tonnes of oil each year, accounting for about five percent of the country’s total refinery production.
The refinery has repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian attacks. An attack reported in May temporarily halted operations in the region and contributed to fuel supply disruptions as Ukraine intensified its attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure.
