A Utah children’s book author who once wrote about helping her young sons cope with grief was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of killing her husband with a fentanyl-laced drink.
Kouri Richins was sentenced in a case that stunned observers with its mix of alleged greed, deceit and deeply personal consequences.
In imposing the sentence, Judge Richard Mrazik said he considered the full scope of the case under Utah law, including the seriousness of the crime and its impact on those involved.
He noted that even if sentenced to less than 25 years of life in prison, Richins likely wouldn’t be eligible for parole until age 66.

The judge said the sentence ensured Richins “could not harm anyone for the next thirty years or more” and acknowledged that he had caused long-term emotional harm to his children.
Stating that he has “real concern” about children for the coming decades and cannot predict how his views will develop over time, he expressed hope that those affected by Eric Richins’ death will eventually find peace.
The judge added that Kouri Richins was “too dangerous to be free.”
Before the sentence was given, the judge warned those in the courtroom to remain calm.

Jurors heard that she closed on a $2.9 million mansion the day her husband died and then spent more than $1.3 million in insurance proceeds in the months.
