From Comey to Carroll, Trump’s D.C. has become a full-time work for attorneys

Amidst the maelstrom of accusations, counter-accusations, investigations and prosecutions, one thing is clear:
It’s nice to be a lawyer in the Trump era.

A federal judge just dismissed a lawsuit that forced Hunter Biden to register with the Justice Department as a foreign agent for Ukraine and China. The lawsuit was filed by a group founded by senior White House official Stephen Miller, and it was determined that the group was not standing.

The former president’s son needed a lawyer; just as he did during the criminal proceedings that led him to confess his guilt until his father broke his promise and forgave him.
The Justice Department plans to ask the Supreme Court to intervene in Trump’s appeal of an $83 million verdict in a defamation lawsuit filed by author E. Jean Carroll. He needed a lawyer. Trump is represented by Justice Department lawyers who often appear to be his private firm. His appeal could end the case.

And of course, he needed lawyers when he was off duty and the subject of four criminal investigations.
Given the vast reach of federal agencies, Capitol Hill staff and lobby groups, Washington has long been a magnet for those with law degrees.
But it was never like this.
Trump needed lawyers to defend him during two impeachments, and House investigative committees also provided counsel.
The president leveled accusations against fired FBI chief James Comey, who had to hire a lawyer until the case was thrown out of court. Now Trump has launched a second indictment over the 86*47 seashell photo and Comey needs a lawyer again. The same goes for New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose indictment was dismissed.

Trump declared yesterday that “crazy” Hakeem Jeffries “will be charged with ACCIDENTING VIOLENCE”; This appears to suggest that the minority leader’s rhetoric is connected to the third assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Jeffries had called for a “maximum war,” which he described as an effort to win more seats in redistricting battles.
Trump filed a lawsuit against the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CBS and ABC, among other media outlets, requiring heavy legal representation.

It’s not just Trump. When FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced a review of Desney/ABC-affiliated local station licenses on the heels of calling for Jimmy Kimmel to be fired, he created an opening for many billable hours. The review could take years and is unlikely to be successful.
FBI Director Kash Patel filed a $250 million lawsuit against Atlantic for a negative profile that questioned his on-duty behavior and drinking habits, but there was no hint of classified information.

Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales, the two House members who resigned amid sexual misconduct allegations, certainly needed legal advice rather than face outright expulsion.
The third, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, resigned after being found guilty of stealing $5 million in FEMA funds.

However, it is not necessary to make mistakes. DOGE had lawyers. Think tanks have lawyers. Unions have lawyers. Environmental groups have lawyers.
Big technology giants, who are becoming increasingly close to the Trump administration, have stepped up their legal game in Washington.
Fired Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is under investigation by the department’s inspector general.
Trump continues to fire prosecutors he deems insufficiently aggressive and replace them with new lawyers.
Pro-life groups have sued to halt mail-in access to the abortion pill mifepristone, but for now have gotten nothing but a temporary procedural ruling from the Supreme Court.
And then there are the endless calls that go on for seemingly endless rounds.

The District of Columbia is a place where everyone wants something. And that usually requires legitimate firepower.
I’m sure most of these lawyers do a good job. This is not a blow to the profession. But like the gold diggers of old, they go where the shine is.
