CSK Look to Continue Playoffs Push Against Eliminated LSG

Lucknow: Still looking to make it to the play-offs despite an inconsistent campaign, Chennai Super Kings will look to continue their recent resilient run by taking on the already eliminated Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL match here on Friday. While CSK managed to survive the second half of the season with timely wins, LSG’s campaign fell apart due to a series of ordinary performances.

The equation for Chennai is clear: win the remaining matches and hope other results work in their favour. CSK currently sit fifth in the table with six wins from 11 matches.

Despite frequent criticism that they lacked finishing firepower, the five-time champions showed some competition with significant contributions from Sanju Samson, Urvil Patel, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and several other newcomers.

Young batsman Urvil’s fearless approach at the top added the much-needed impetus to CSK’s powerplay scoring. On Friday, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma and Dewald Brevis also have important roles to play in the midfield on a surface that is expected to aid batting.

However, the bowling unit suffered a major blow recently with all-rounder Jamie Overton ruled out of the rest of the IPL due to a thigh injury and returning to England for further evaluation.

This significant blow marks another injury setback this season, affecting CSK’s play-off bid.

CSK’s bowling was largely defined by Overton’s outstanding performances before his injury. He was providing significant breakthroughs in the middle overs and was one of CSK’s best bowlers this season, taking 14 wickets in 10 matches.

But despite a season plagued with injuries to key players, a disciplined and varied attack, including Akeal Hosein, helped the team achieve vital wins.

For the most part, Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj did the job expected of them and Afghanistan’s left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad was also effective.

Lucknow, on the other hand, have little to play for but pride after failing to gain any momentum throughout the season.

Skipper Rishabh Pant’s prolonged poor form hurt the side badly, while their bowling attack struggled to defend totals or contain the opposition batsmen in crucial stages, including when they failed to defend 203 in the first match against CSK.

Josh Inglis, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh provided occasional moments of brilliance, but LSG’s failure to perform as a collective unit has left them bottom of the 10-team table.

With the knockout pressure now gone, LSG can still be dangerous at home, especially at a time when the Ekana circuit is increasingly favoring batsmen.

CSK will also be wary of getting complacent against a team that now has the freedom to play without fear, and the home team will also back itself to exploit the familiar conditions better than CSK.
