Hyderabad Tops Telangana Cancer Chart, State Records 52 Cases Per Lakh: Cancer Atlas

Hyderabad: The state government’s cancer treatment advisor, renowned radiation oncologist Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu said Telangana recorded an average of 52 cancer cases per lakh population in the last five years from 2020 to 2025. This data was obtained from Aarogyasri records and there may be more patients receiving treatment outside the programme.
Dr Dattatreyudu presented the ‘Telangana Cancer Atlas’ containing the data to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday. The data also includes incidence and prevalence cases, payment methods, age groups and cancer types.
“Our data is from Aarogyasri for the last five years. It is not alarming,” he said. In an exclusive speech to Deccan Chronicle after presenting the ‘Cancer Atlas’ to the Prime Minister, Dr Dattatreyudu said that the top five districts in terms of cancer cases are Hyderabad, Hanamkonda, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla and Jagtial.
The data will be uploaded to the cancer website launched by the health department. Cancer has been declared a notifiable disease in Telangana, which means all hospitals must report cancer cases to the government. This will lead to an updated database that will help the government prepare focused cancer care programmes.
“We met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and presented the ‘Telangana Cancer Atlas’, which also has a road map. For example, if the numbers are high in a district, resources and cancer centers can be directed to that area. We can look at increasing mobile cancer screening and treatment.”
Earlier, the Prime Minister congratulated Dr Dattatreyudu for preparing the report and said that the atlas was an important tool in the fight against the disease.
Revanth Reddy said the report will help the government identify areas where cancer cases are high and explore the reasons behind the increasing number of cases in these areas. The data presented in the report will allow the government to establish special cancer screening centers in areas where cases are more common. He said the government was committed to strengthening the health infrastructure for cancer treatment across the state.
Revanth Reddy also announced that private hospitals will be established not only in Hyderabad but also in areas where the number of cancer patients is high, so that people can access treatment closer to their hometown. He directed the authorities to ensure that cancer treatment under the Aarogyasri scheme is provided more effectively in corporate hospitals.
Among those present at the meeting were health minister C. Damodar Rajanarsimha, MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, CMO principal secretary Sreenivasa Raju and health secretary Dr Christina Z. Chongthu.
