Police investigating after masked men attack Blackburn cafe prayer room with ‘fire bombs’

Lancashire police are investigating after the Muslim prayer room of a cafe in Blackburn was seriously damaged when masked men attacked it with what appeared to be fire bombs.

CCTV footage shows the men attacking from a prayer room window located near the entrance of Café Raha. It was stated that the incident occurred at around 02.30 on Monday morning.

Police and fire brigades were called to the scene and an investigation was launched.

A police spokesman said: “Detectives are investigating and carrying out a number of inquiries, including checking CCTV in the area. “No suspects have been identified at this time.

“Although the motivation for the attack has not yet been fully determined, there is currently no suggestion that the incident was racially or religiously motivated.”

The statement continued: “We recognize that incidents like this can be very distressing for local residents and the wider community in Blackburn, but we would like to reassure you that this is an ongoing and active police investigation and we will provide you with an update as soon as we have completed our investigations.

“We have increased security patrols in the area so members of the public will see an increased police presence in the area. If you see our police officers in your area and are concerned please come and speak to us.”

This is reportedly the second incident of its kind in the week; Police insist neither was racially or religiously motivated.

Blackburn MP Adnan Hussain offered his support to Café Raha and described the “shocking and distressing” incident as “completely unacceptable”.

“I was deeply concerned to hear of the recent arson attack on Café Raha in Blackburn, which damaged part of the premises, including the prayer room,” Mr Hussain wrote in a statement.

“This was a shocking and saddening incident and my thoughts are with the owner of the cafe, his staff and everyone affected. A member of my team visited the cafe to offer support and I am encouraged to hear that the owner is determined to reopen as soon as possible.”

“I also welcome the support and assistance provided by Lancashire Police as they continue their investigation.

“Blackburn is a town defined by hard work, resilience and strong community spirit. Incidents like this have no place in our society and are completely unacceptable. I hope those responsible are quickly identified and brought to justice.

“My office has been in contact with the business owner and we stand ready to provide any assistance we can during this difficult time.”

The Board of Deputies of British Jews issued a statement in solidarity with the cafe in a post on Friday, writing: “News of an arson attack this week at a prayer room used by Muslim communities in Blackburn is deeply worrying.

“Although the motive of the perpetrators has not yet been determined, our society must ensure that all faith communities can live without the threat of violence or intimidation.”
