APSPDCL to provide prepaid smart meters for government services from June 1

Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPPDCL) on Friday, May 15, 2026, announced that it will provide prepaid smart meters to state electricity services across its jurisdiction from June 1.

APSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Sivasankar Lotheti stated that the decision taken in line with the directives of the central government will be implemented in government offices, water works and municipal bodies in Tirupati, Nellore, Chittoor, Annamayya, Kadapa, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapuram and Sri Sathya Sai districts.

The decision comes at a time when the company is facing difficulties due to electricity bills of ₹ 9,507 crore from government agencies in these nine districts alone.

Smart meters have been installed in many offices in order to reduce the burden of pending electricity debts from departments and improve the financial situation of energy distribution companies.

With the Union government making prepaid meters mandatory, the company is accelerating the implementation process. “Thanks to prepaid metering, electricity consumption can be constantly monitored, power usage can be controlled and savings opportunities on electricity bills will increase,” said Sivasankar Lotheti, adding that it will be implemented as of June 1.

A whopping 1.17 lakh services are expected to be introduced under this prepaid metering system, which includes 91,306 single-phase and 26,507 three-phase services. The district-wise distribution is Nellore – 17,067; Tirupati – 19,545; Chittoor – 14,622; Annamayya – 14,346; Kadapa – 16,261; Anantapuram – 8,422; Sri Sathya Sai – 7,002; Kurnool – 10,603 and Nandyal – 9,945 services.
