RSPCA seek help over string of suspected kangaroo killings in Warrenup, Western Australia
Wildlife rangers are appealing for help from the community following multiple reports of suspected intentional kangaroo attacks off the coast of Western Australia.
Investigations into a number of deaths and injuries began in June this year, when concerns were first reported to RSPCA WA.
Investigators have since received further reports of adult kangaroos and orphaned dogs dying in the Warrenup area near Albany in Western Australia, including Menegola Drive and Wiltshire Crescent.
RSPCA WA inspector Shaye Barrow pleaded with the community for help with their investigation.
“It is extremely distressing to receive allegations that healthy adult kangaroos were deliberately targeted, with cubs orphaned, seriously injured or killed,” he said.
“If these allegations are substantiated, they represent a serious animal welfare concern.”
The maximum penalty for animal cruelty in Western Australia is a $50,000 fine and five years’ imprisonment.
RSPCA WA said investigations would focus specifically on incidents reported on June 22, July 7, 18, 19 and 22.
“We would appeal to anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the Warrenup area, particularly Menegola Drive, Wiltshire Crescent and surrounding roads and parklands, to come forward,” Inspector Barrow said.
“Even images that may seem insignificant can provide important information to help determine what is going on.”
