Horror as car ploughs into crowds in Modena city centre leaving at least 7 injured | World | News

Several people were injured when a car crashed into a crowd of people walking in the historic city center on Saturday afternoon. At least seven people were injured in the incident, which took place in the city center of Modena in central Italy, four of whom are believed to be in critical condition.

A car traveling at high speed from Largo Garibaldi reportedly hit pedestrians on Via Emilia Centro. The car then crashed into a shopping window, according to news outlet Il Resto del Carlino. The alleged driver then allegedly fled the vehicle.

Local reports suggest the driver then tried to stab a passerby, who intervened and tried to stop them.

Mayor Massimo Mezzetti, who went to the scene after the horror scenes, described the incident as “a grave, dramatic event that hit our city at its heart.”

He continued: “We need to understand the nature of this, but this is a tragic incident. I am deeply shocked. Whatever its nature, it is a very serious incident.”

“These are dramatic moments. It’s too early to speculate about what happened.” He added: “There will be investigations.”

Mayor Mezzetti said that the seriously injured were transferred to Maggiore Hospital in Bologna.

The mayor added that one of the injured “will probably have to have both legs amputated.”

Following the incident, one person was detained and his police interrogation continues.

It was stated that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was following the events in Modena “with great attention” and described the incident as “extremely serious”.

Meloni said in a statement: “The incident in Modena today, where a man allegedly ran over several pedestrians and then stabbed a passerby, is extremely serious.

“I express my closeness to the injured and their families. I also express my gratitude to the citizens who bravely intervened and the law enforcement officers who intervened to stop the perpetrator.

“I have spoken with the Mayor and am in constant contact with authorities to follow developments regarding the situation. I believe the perpetrator will be held fully accountable for his actions.”

According to Il Resto del Carlino sources, Prime Minister Meloni is in constant communication with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Council Presidency Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano.

The Italian Prime Minister is currently participating in the European Gulf Forum in Navarino, Greece, aiming to strengthen a broader strategy linking Europe, the Mediterranean and the Gulf on energy security, migration and regional stability.
