This tech job grew 729% in a year amid AI-related layoffs. Salaries now touch ₹1.7 crore

As AI reshapes enterprise technology, there’s one job title that’s quietly become the most sought-after position in Silicon Valley: forward-deployed engineer. Hiring data shows that postings for the position have increased by more than 700 percent in a single year, with salaries soaring to well over $200,000.

While layoffs and automation anxiety dominate tech industry headlines, a distinct counter-narrative is emerging in business data. Advanced secondment engineers and professionals who engage directly with client companies to integrate AI into workflows and develop custom tools are in demand at a scale that few roles in any industry can currently match.

What is an Advanced Duty Engineer and What Do They Actually Do?

Forward assignment engineers, commonly referred to in the industry as FDEs, work in client organizations rather than in their own company’s offices. Their core function is to take AI platforms and products and adapt them to the specific operational needs of the businesses that use them (which could mean customizing software, redesigning workflows, or building entirely new tools from scratch).

This role was pioneered and popularized by data analytics company Palantir, whose business model is based on placing engineers directly with customers to develop software calibrated to their exact needs. This model has since been adopted industry-wide.

Increased from 643 Job Postings to 5,330 Job Postings in Twelve Months

The scale of demand for future commissioned engineers is very high. In April last year, there were 643 job postings for forward-deployment engineering roles on Indeed. According to data shared with Business Insider, this figure increased to 5,330 postings by April 2026; This represents an increase of approximately 729 percent on a yearly basis.

Writing on LinkedIn this week, Box CEO Aaron Levie outlined the situation clearly.

“Forward-deployed engineers, or equivalent movement roles, are about to become one of the most sought-after jobs in technology. And one of the most important functions for the rollout of AI,” Levie said.

As enterprise demand for specialized AI tools continues to grow, companies actively hiring for this position include Anthropic, OpenAI, Palantir, and Stripe. Google Cloud general manager Thomas Kurian also announced on LinkedIn this week that the company is ramping up hiring for the role, citing growing demand from customers and partners for AI products.

Why Are Future Deployed Engineers Paid More Than $200,000?

The pay for the role reflects its scarcity and strategic importance. According to Indeed data, salaries for advanced assignment engineering positions range from approximately $170,000 to $200,000, placing this role among the most generously paid positions in the tech industry.

The bonus is determined by the breadth of skills required. Future commissioned engineers must combine deep technical competence with the communication and problem-solving abilities traditionally associated with management consulting; This is a truly rare combination in the labor market.

Why Do McKinsey, BCG, and the Consulting Industry Also Hire FDEs?

The demand for future secondment engineers is no longer limited to technology companies. As firms position themselves as the primary channel through which large organizations adopt and operationalize AI, the management consulting industry has aggressively turned to the same talent pool.

For firms like McKinsey and Company and Boston Consulting Group, expectations of what constitutes an ideal consultant have changed dramatically. Technical fluency is now seen as a basic requirement rather than a distinguishing feature.

The job posting for a Principal Advanced Delivery Engineer at QuantumBlack, McKinsey’s artificial intelligence division, states that candidates must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a technical discipline such as computer science, machine learning, applied statistics, mathematics, engineering or artificial intelligence, as well as more than eight years of hands-on experience in software, platform or infrastructure engineering.

Alex Singla, senior partner at McKinsey and co-chairman of QuantumBlack, was direct about what the firm looks for in candidates.

“What we want to be able to do is find people who tend to be both a great McKinsey consultant and a great technologist, and then train them to be both,” Singla said.

The Only Tech Job That Artificial Intelligence Creates Rather Than Destroys

The rise of the forward-deployed engineer contrasts sharply with the broader narrative surrounding AI and employment. Where much of the debate focuses on which professional roles AI will eliminate, FDE represents a category of jobs that AI is actively producing; because every enterprise deployment of technology requires human expertise to make it functional in practice.

The consulting industry’s shift towards technical recruitment shows that the line between technology company and consulting firm is rapidly narrowing, and the advanced secondment engineer is right at this intersection.
