Two women, who were fast asleep in their homes, were burned when miscreants poured kerosene and set them on fire in Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
Doctors said that two children in the house escaped and two women were taken to Virudhunagar Government Medical College and Hospital, where they were fighting for their lives.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Shanti, 40, from Palayampatti near Aruppukottai, was living in the house with her two children. Her husband Pandiarajan had died. He was a guard at Gopalapuram. His 16-year-old son was studying at polytechnic college, and his daughter was a 7th grade student.
Shanti’s relative, 45-year-old Sridevi, who works as a nurse, is said to have come to Shanti’s house and spent the night there. It is said that while all four of them were sleeping, they did not close the door completely. The tyrants may have entered at around 03:00 at night, set the two women on fire, and escaped under the cover of darkness.
Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police Srinatha visited the crime scene. An investigation was ongoing as to whether the incident was a planned attempted murder due to previous hostility. Aruppukottai Town station Inspector Gangai Natha Pandian is investigating.
