Girl, 8, dies after ‘falling from wheelchair’ during primary school sports day | UK | News

A young girl who allegedly fell from her wheelchair at a primary school’s sports day in Scotland died. The heartbreaking incident happened at Greenburn School in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, on May 15.

It was learned that an 8-year-old girl died after falling from her wheelchair during the race. He was rushed to hospital and subsequently discharged, but after falling ill he was hospitalized again and sadly died.

Police Scotland said they were treating the student’s death as an unexplained incident and that investigations into the incident were ongoing.

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed the girl’s classmates had received support.

A spokesman said: “We are aware that one of our students has tragically passed away. We will be offering support to classmates and staff as we deal with this tragedy.”

A Police Scotland spokesman added: “At around 11.45am on Saturday 16 May 2026, we received a report that an eight-year-old girl had become unwell at a property in East Kilbride.

“Emergency services arrived and the child was taken to hospital where he died. The cause of death is treated as unexplained and the investigation is ongoing.”
