An MS NOW reporter is reviewing FBI statistics she calls “basically bogus” after touting those previously released under the Biden administration without such review.
Co-authored by MS NOW justice reporter Ken Dilanian report Last week, FBI Director Kash Patel was alleged to have “padded the statistics” to increase the number of arrests, citing sources inside the agency.
“It was remarkable to hear Kash Patel actually address these statistics that our sources say are basically fake,” Dilanian said, referring to Patel’s contentious Senate hearing.

Dilanian claimed that Patel “changed the policy” so that violent arrests by other agencies, including the FBI, were included in the tally, adding, “There are no more fugitives or detainees off the streets. It’s just a numbers game.”
He also accused Patel’s FBI of “gaming the system” when touting arrests from the FBI’s Most Wanted list, claiming the agency would add names to the list shortly before they were arrested.
“We looked at the numbers: Of the six fugitives caught during Patel’s tenure, four were caught within a month of being listed, two were caught within a day, and one was caught within an hour,” Dilanian said. he said.
“So these statistics don’t add up and Patel takes responsibility for things that are not actually true,” he added.

FBI spokesman Ben Williamson denied the allegations, telling Dilanian in his report: “The allegations here to discredit law enforcement are false and are the latest attempt by the FBI and this administration to tarnish what has been the most prolific reduction in crime in the history of the United States.”
But Maze Moore as X personality highlighted On Thursday, Dilanian was far less skeptical of crime statistics released by the Biden-era FBI and even criticized Republicans for not believing them.
“By the way, the latest FBI numbers from cities — the FBI isn’t making these numbers up — show that violent crime overall is down 3% in 2023, and murder is down 11.6%. That’s the largest single-year decline on record,” Dilanian told network colleague Katy Tur in September 2024.

Dilanian argued that then-candidate and former President Donald Trump’s claim that violent crime increased 43% under then-President Joe Biden was “completely false.” He also rejected Trump’s claim that cities no longer report crime statistics to the FBI, insisting that “94% of the population” was represented in the latest data, which he celebrated approaching pre-pandemic levels.
“This should be controversial, but it’s not because Republicans and others are pushing the narrative that this data is wrong, that crime is somehow going up when it’s down,” Dilanian told then-MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell. he said.
“This is good news. It’s too bad not everyone is ready to accept it,” he later said.
