Huge explosion at NYC shipyard leaves at least one dead and 37 injured after workers became trapped by blaze

At least one person died and dozens were injured in a massive explosion at a shipyard in New York City.
The dry dock at Mariners Harbor on Staten Island was shaken by an explosion that occurred about 50 minutes after a fire broke out on a ship around 3:30 p.m.
Fire crews were responding to a fire in the basement of a 150 square meter metal building, where at least two workers were trapped when the explosion occurred.
As of 5 p.m., 37 people had been reported injured, including more than a dozen firefighters, FDNY spokeswoman Joanna Mariano confirmed to the Daily Mail.
It has been reported that the only person who has lost his life so far is a civilian. It was learned that two of the firefighters and the other were in critical condition, while the other two firefighters were slightly injured.
The rest of the injured, including two emergency room workers who were taken to a hospital on Staten Island, suffered minor injuries.
“This was a complex, rapidly evolving emergency,” NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a press conference Friday evening.
‘One fire chief is in critical condition and one firefighter is in serious condition,’ Mamdani continued.
Fire crews were fighting the fire in the 150 square meter metal structure, where at least two workers were trapped in the explosion that occurred on Friday afternoon.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that more than 30 civilians and emergency responders were injured and one civilian died as the crew continued to fight the fire.
Mamdani added that emergency responders remained at the scene to control and extinguish the fire. The FDNY later told the Daily Mail that the fire was under control as of 7:20 p.m.
‘A few minutes ago I met with the firefighter and his family, as well as the fire chief’s family. I am deeply impressed by their courage and their service to this city.
‘I regret to inform you that a civilian has lost his life. ‘I offer my deepest condolences to his loved ones.’
Mamdani added that emergency responders remained at the scene to control and extinguish the fire. The FDNY later told the Daily Mail that the fire was under control as of 7:20 p.m.
More than 200 firefighters and emergency medical personnel were on the scene Friday evening, according to Mariano.
The FDNY confirmed that approximately 70 units were dispatched as fire and emergency personnel arrived on scene.
The area is home to many businesses, including a coffee roasting company and a self-storage facility. The shipyard was owned by the Bethlehem Steel Company, which built ships for the US Navy during World War II.
Richard Obiozor, a native of the area, said: alphabet 7: ‘We saw a group of fire trucks and I heard someone say that all the fire trucks and police officers on the island were here.’
‘A few minutes later there was a big explosion, a shock wave, and a person in a white suit, who was the captain, I think, said “move back.”
Councilor Joann Ariola said on Facebook: ‘Our hearts go out to the family of the civilian killed in today’s devastating dry dock explosion on Staten Island. I pray for all the injured, especially the brave firefighters and first responders who rushed toward danger to protect others.
While 200 firefighters and emergency service personnel arrived at the scene, approximately 70 teams were dispatched.
‘As the Chief of Fire and Emergency Management, I want to thank the FDNY and all emergency workers on the scene for your courage and unwavering dedication to our city. New Yorkers should never forget the heroes who answered the call when seconds mattered.
‘Please keep all the injured workers, firefighters and their families in your thoughts and prayers tonight.’
While the cause of the fire and explosion has not yet been determined, the investigation continues.
This is breaking news.
