Human remains found off A617 Rainworth Bypass as cordon still in place | UK | News

Suspicious human remains were found in woodland next to the A617 Rainworth Bypass. Nottinghamshire Police said it launched an investigation after the skeletal remains were found by members of the public at around 2.45pm yesterday (Saturday, May 23).

Police also said a police cordon has been established and is planned to remain there for some time while our investigations continue.

However, police added that the road is currently open while investigations are carried out at the scene.

Detective Inspector Matt Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I understand that a report of this nature would cause concern among the public, but I would like to reassure you that this incident does not pose any risk to public safety.

“Although the investigation is still in its early stages, I can confirm that the remains we have found so far are believed to be those of a single person.

“This person has not yet been identified but a special police team is working to confirm this as soon as possible.

“We have a dedicated team of specialist forensic officers carrying out the investigations. This will help us better understand the circumstances of how the body got there and see if there is further information that can be gathered about the death.”

DI Scott added: “The discovery of human remains is taken extremely seriously. “A full investigation is underway and we are keeping an open mind at this time.

“It is important for me to emphasize that this will also probably take us some time. There will still be a scene that will be guarded by police officers for a few days while our work continues.

“As our investigation progresses over the Bank Holiday weekend and into next week, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area. I would encourage anyone with any concerns to please come forward and speak to us.”
