F1 Canadian Grand Prix result: Kimi Antonelli wins as George Russell retires

George Russell suffered a major blow to his championship hopes when he relinquished the lead at the Canadian Grand Prix and handed the victory to his teammate Kimi Antonelli.
The two Mercedes drivers staged a gripping battle for the lead, swapping places several times and were still nose-to-nose when Russell’s car stopped suddenly on lap 30.
Antonelli’s fourth consecutive win and Russell’s retirement due to what Mercedes says is a power unit problem puts the Italian 43 points ahead in the championship; seven points behind with two clear wins.
Russell’s retirement was not only a bitter blow for the Briton, but also disrupted the no-holds-barred race between the two Mercedes drivers, who finished second in two days after an altercation during Saturday’s sprint.
For the second day in a row, Antonelli complained about Russell’s driving and accused him of pushing him off the track.
And shortly before Russell’s race ended, both drivers were warned to keep the race “orderly” or they would be told to hold their positions.
There had been a few rounds of wild action before this and when Russell retired it appeared Antonelli had the speed advantage.
The highlights of an exciting race were:
-
A dramatic change in the title fight between Russell and Antonelli
-
A tough race for McLaren after an error in tire strategy at the start
-
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen takes first podium of the year
More to follow.
