SOUTHCOM strikes suspected drug-trafficking vessel in Eastern Pacific

The US military launched a deadly attack on a suspected drug-smuggling ship in the Eastern Pacific on Tuesday, killing an alleged narco-terrorist, according to US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

A post on SOUTHCOM he said.

“Intelligence confirmed the ship was transiting known drug smuggling routes in the Eastern Pacific and was involved in drug smuggling operations,” the post continued.

The army said one alleged narco-terrorist was killed in the attack, while two others survived.

SOUTHCOM said the U.S. Coast Guard was immediately notified to begin search and rescue operations for survivors.

The military said no U.S. soldiers were injured.

SOUTHCOM did not immediately release additional information about those targeted in the operation.

The US military has carried out several strikes targeting ships suspected of drug smuggling in recent months as part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling cartel-linked smuggling operations.

Tuesday’s strike follows similar operations earlier this month.

SOUTHCOM said it targeted another ship in the Eastern Pacific on May 8, killing two male narco-terrorists and leaving one survivor. Days earlier, the military carried out another attack in the Caribbean, killing two suspected smugglers.

The Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean are major corridors for drug trafficking; Cartels often use small, fast-moving ships to transport drugs to the United States and Central America.

SOUTHCOM directs military operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean, including counternarcotics missions focused on disrupting drug trafficking networks affiliated with organized crime groups.
