Newsom vows to levy 100% tax on California recipients of Trump’s $1.8-billion ‘slush fund’
SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom has threatened to tax 100% of the money Californians receive from the “gunfight” fund President Trump created for his political allies.
Trump’s Department of Justice announced last week that the Biden administration would establish a $1.776 billion fund within the Department of Justice to pay compensation to the president’s allies who claimed that they were “exposed to arms and legal sanctions.”
“We want to tax 100% of that income from anyone who receives any of these funds from California,” the governor told reporters Thursday.

How Newsom will do this remains unclear. He stated that the Democrat-led California Legislature must act to implement the new tax. If adopted, the measure is likely to face legal challenges.
