Khadija Shaw: Manchester City’s future bright with striker key

Shaw said he was “a bit nervous” about announcing his new deal after the victory at Wembley.

Fans had been on an emotional rollercoaster surrounding his departure and Chelsea were poised to capitalize on the opportunity.

But after a long season that saw Shaw pick up a host of individual awards, including WSL Player of the Year and the Golden Boot, she was delighted to get her hands on another piece of silverware.

“It feels good to double up,” Shaw said. “I always said Manchester was my home. It took a while but we finally got it.” [the contract agreement] It’s done.”

The opening game at Wembley was crucial as Brighton dominated the first 30 minutes and City struggled to hold on.

One moment – a cross to Shaw in the 38th minute – changed the game as the Jamaican striker headed the ball past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

This destroyed Brighton’s momentum and captain Alex Greenwood’s strike just before half-time gave City the lead.

Jeglertz admitted Shaw’s goal gave his side “relief” and his second-half assist to Fujino put City out of sight. A late goal from substitute Vivianne Miedema confirmed the victory.

Despite the noise last month, Shaw remained the standout player. She was important in the final, the match-winner in the semi-final and finished the WSL season with a double on the final day, scoring 21 goals in 22 matches.

“I’m very impressed with how you handled this [speculation]” said Jeglertz. “He never showed any mood that affected his performance.

“Of course he knows the writing. But he was also very professional, always performed, and was always a good person.”
