Trump administration proposes 25% tariff on Brazilian goods over unfair trade practices

The Office of the United States Trade Representative has proposed a 25% tariff on Brazilian goods under Section 301, finding that the South American country has engaged in practices that are “unconscionable and burden or restrict U.S. commerce.”
Some of these practices also include anti-corruption enforcement, intellectual property protection, ethanol market access and illegal deforestation, according to the U.S. Trade Representative.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that the investigation under Section 301 was initiated on the orders of US President Donald Trump.
Greer said that although Trump had “several constructive conversations” with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the two sides continued to have significant differences in resolving the issues identified in this investigation.
