London Tube strikes live: Severe delays and suspensions across capital as 24-hour walkout takes effect

(P.A.)

Due to the RMT’s strike this morning, large parts of the London Underground network have been either suspended or majorly disrupted.

According to the TfL website, London Underground lines such as the Circle and Waterloo & City lines are completely suspended, while the District, Hammersmith & City, Northern and Victoria lines are experiencing serious delays. Parts of the Bakerloo, Central, Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines were also suspended. The Jubilee line operates with minor delays.

The London Underground said the strikes began after talks failed to resolve a dispute over the working week.

Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) members began striking after midnight on Tuesday and will do so again on Thursday, threatening major disruption to travel in the capital.

TfL has warned that the entire tube network will be affected, with many lines offering reduced services.

The industrial action was taken in response to issues including the new four-day week, which the union said its members disagreed with.

Drivers’ union Aslef accepted the new regulations.

Which metro lines are operating today?

As the London Underground remains inaccessible to the vast majority of passengers today, passengers are advised to check before traveling as other lines will be extremely busy.

TfL says failed talks ‘bitter disappointment’

London Underground drivers will go on strike on Tuesday and Thursday after talks to prevent a strike failed.

On Monday, a TfL spokesman said: “It is bitterly disappointing that, despite five-hour meetings with the RMT at ACAS and repeated assurances that the four-day working week proposals would remain voluntary, the RMT has chosen to continue with disruptive strike action.

“We will do our best to provide as much service as possible during this action.”

The dispute centers on plans to introduce a voluntary four-day working week with compressed hours, which Rail, Maritime and Transport union members voted against.

But about half of subway drivers, including Aslef members, accepted the proposal, arguing that it gave workers more flexibility and was the kind of deal unions should support.

South West trains collide with flooding and fallen trees

Disruptions to South Western Railway services on Tuesday morning also affected commuters and other commuters.

The operator said all lines were blocked because the railway between Fulwell and Shepperton was flooded due to heavy rain.

Passengers have been told that train services to and from these stations may be canceled or postponed, and disruption is expected until 11am.

Services were also disrupted due to “precarious” trees between Weybridge and Hersham in Surrey, leading to the closure of some lines to Surbiton.
