Morrisons and Asda approved a new £13 rule in UK stores in July that will give workers a major boost. Both supermarket chains are increasing pay rates for some staff roles and the increase is being phased in. Morrisons announced in May that the proposed pay deal for its supermarket and manufacturing colleagues under the national agreement with USDAW had been secured at 91.87% in favor of staff and would be implemented in three phases.

The first phase began in March and saw hourly pay rates for Customer Assistant rise to £12.81; this is expected to increase again for the second phase in July. From Monday 20 July, Morrisons has confirmed that the rate of pay for a Customer Assistant will increase from £12.81 to £13, while all other hourly rates for roles under the agreement will increase by 19p.

Phase three will increase the rate of pay for a Customer Assistant from £13 to £13.11 from Monday 26 October, with all other hourly rates set for roles within the agreement increasing by 23p.

In addition, all hourly-paid Morrisons staff will receive a one-off fixed payment of between £25 and £175, depending on their Contracted Hours.

Jodie Keating, Group People Director at Morrisons, said: “We are delighted to now be able to implement the pay offer and increase the pay of our colleagues to reward them for their contribution to our business. I would like to thank all our colleagues for everything they continue to do for Morrisons.”

Asda is also increasing the pay of its 110,000 hourly staff with pay rises of 4% above inflation, effective over two dates.

The first phase of the pay rise came into force on 1 April, with national hourly pay rates for staff at Asda Retail and Asda Express stores off the M25 increasing by 11p per hour, from £12.60 to £12.71.

Hourly pay rates for workers in Asda stores within the M25 increased from £13.82 to £13.93 on 1 April; This represents an increase of 11p per hour. But workers will receive an additional pay increase next month in July, as Asda rolls out the second phase of the rollout.

From Sunday 5 July, hourly pay rates for staff working in stores outside the M25 will rise from £12.71 to £13.10; This means a pay increase of 39 pence per hour.

Meanwhile, hourly wages for staff working in shops within the M25 will rise from £13.93 to £14.35 from 5 July; This is an increase of 42p per hour.

Asda said total investment in retail payments since its acquisition by TDR Capital and the Issa brothers in 2021 has now reached £575 million. Hourly pay rates increased by 40% during this period, from £9.36 in 2021 to £13.10 in 2026.

Asda Chief People Officer James Goodman said: “Our store colleagues are at the heart of our business and the role they play in serving customers is central to our Growth Formula turnaround plan.

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to reward them with above-inflation pay and invest in this way. I’d also like to thank them for their determination and hard work in making Asda better every day.”
