Nightclub promoter, 21, stabbed to death after brawl in Dublin’s tourism district | Ireland

A fight in the heart of Dublin’s tourist area led to a nightclub promoter being chased and stabbed to death.

The incident occurred around 03:00 on Monday after a concert ended in the Grafton Street area of the city centre, which is popular with tourists.

Police said Qayyum Balogun, 21, was chased and stabbed on nearby Clarendon Street following a clash between rival groups. He was taken to St James hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Parts of the shopping district remained closed Monday while forensic teams examined the area.

Balogun is reportedly Nigerian and was promoting music concerts in the city centre. Police think the dispute started in a venue and spread to the street. Irish Independent reported It was stated that a female witness, who was not affiliated with the rival groups, suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Irish police are reviewing CCTV footage and awaiting autopsy results. They appealed to witnesses. Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan expressed his condolences to Balogun’s family.

Father John Grennan, abbot of St Teresa’s Carmelite church in Clarendon Street, expressed his shock at the death. “I want to offer our compassion and prayers for those who are here,” he told RTÉ.

Fianna Fáil councilor Rory Hogan said the violence was deeply disturbing. “Incidents like this have a profound impact not only on the victim’s family but also on the wider community.”

However, Hogan added that crime rates in Ireland’s capital have fallen and the city has become safer than before. “We need to make sure we break down the emotional response to an event like this into overall statistics,” he said. National murder rates fell by a quarter last year.

Police are also investigating a separate incident in which a man in his 30s entered the River Liffey after being attacked in the Islandbridge area of Dublin on Saturday night. He was pronounced dead on Sunday.

Business owners in the Temple Bar area say lawlessness and anti-social behavior has increased during Covid lockdowns, but increased policing in recent years has improved safety.
