Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was not too incisive towards the United States Ambassador to Canada, Peter Hoekstra. The latter relayed comments on the 51e state held, again, by President Trump in the midst of CUSMA renegotiation.

This action by the ambassador aroused the ire of Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
“I can’t believe I have to say this again, but Canada will never be 51e American state. Canada is not for sale. And while we’re at it, here’s the truth: In April, Ontario created 680% more jobs than the United States, taking into account population. This is how we protect Ontario,” Ford wrote on Network X.
Questioned about this affair during an announcement on federal transfers to Quebec in Longueuil Tuesday afternoon, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ruled that this offense should not be punished by the dismissal of the United States ambassador.
“This is an administration we have to work with. It is our largest trading partner, our largest security partner and we have several other partnerships,” he said in English.
We take this administration as it is.

According to him, President Trump is an “exceptionally active user” of social networks and that Canada will not respond to all of his publications.
This new saga on the 51e This state comes as the Minister responsible for Canada-United States trade, Dominic LeBlanc, is in Washington to relaunch talks related to the revision of CUSMA, the free trade agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Mr. Carney also wanted to point out that Mr. LeBlanc was with our neighbors with a view to collaboration.
“In another world [l’allusion au 51e état] it’s a bit weird. But we live in today’s world and this is an aspect of American negotiation,” he said.
Dominic LeBlanc will have further talks on CUSMA with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer next week.
