Met Office issues heatwave verdict as 32C scorcher forecast to hit 13 counties | Weather | News

And the Met Office’s forecasts match the weather tables very well. The Met Office says the warming climate in the UK, combined with the impact of a possible El Niño event, is shaping the weather for both June and August.

The outlook shows the chances of a warm June are higher than usual, but the beginning of the month is expected to see showers and longer periods of rain in the UK as Atlantic weather systems move across the country.

By mid-June, conditions are more likely to settle under higher pressure, with temperatures generally near normal. Forecasts for the second half of the month point to relatively calm and dry weather across most parts of the UK.

The Met Office said: “Towards the end of June, low pressure may begin to exert further influence, with heavy showers and thunderstorms becoming more likely, particularly in the south. It may also be hot in parts of the south.”

Met Office scientist Dr. Emily Carlisle said: “This spring highlights both the natural variability in weather conditions in the UK and the long-term warming we are observing.

“Although conditions varied throughout the season, average temperatures over the entire three-month meteorological spring were among the ten warmest recorded in the UK.

“While we expect year-to-year fluctuations, this spring illustrates some of the changes we are seeing in our weather patterns, with more extreme conditions becoming more frequent.

“The fact that nine of the ten warmest springs in the UK have occurred since 2007 demonstrates this ongoing shift in the UK’s climate.”
