The UK’s top 10 chippies have been revealed in time to celebrate National Fish and Chips Day today.
According to Britain’s National Fish & Chip Awards 2026, the best chippie in the country is found in arguably the best county, Yorkshire, or God’s Own Country as it is known to locals.
Scrap Box in York dominated the competition and took top spot in the competitive race to be crowned best in the UK. The roast champ is located in a former public toilet block off the side of the A1079. Cod and chips costs £12.95 at The Scrap Box.
The York-based winner is one of four Yorkshire-based fish and chip shops in the list of 10 finalists; Scotland also managed two entries, and London has only one.
Fish and chips is a national takeaway institution and the Daily Express has launched our Save Our Fish and Chips campaign to support great British food.

In third place, Shaws Fish and Chips in South Yorkshire has launched a special offer for National Fish and Chip Day, offering a Hake and Chip Box Meal Deal for £11.20.
The Fish and Chip Awards are judged by top experts from the National Fish Fryer Federation (NFFF).

Gary Lewis, Chairman of NEODA (the day’s founders), said: “National Fish & Chip Day is a celebration of not only a much-loved British tradition, but also the innovation that helps secure its future.
“As we look ahead to the big day in 2026, we encourage shops and our customers to explore a wider range of fish beyond cod and haddock, from hake to pollock and other responsibly sourced species.
“By embracing diversity we can support sustainability, reduce pressure on key stocks and ensure fish and chips remain a staple of British life for generations to come.”
