Andrei Vasilevskiy wins the Vezina Trophy, but not before thinking his car was evidence in a police incident

Tampa Bay Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy is so good these days that it seems like something of a fluke that he’s a Vezina Trophy finalist.

But one of the best shortstops of the last decade isn’t immune from being the butt of jokes, and the Lightning decided to have some fun in giving Vasilevskiy his second career Vezina Trophy, given to the NHL’s best goaltender.

And it was the kind of joke worthy of an episode of “Punk’d.”

…remember “Punk’d”?!

The NHL has been doing this for the last few years, announcing all award winners early instead of doing it at the NHL Awards. I’m not very good at this, and I think the idea is to find ways to surprise the winners and also create sweet, sweet social media content.

With Vasilevskiy winning the award over Boston’s Jeremy Swayman and Islander Ilya Sorokin, the team got creative with how they would award him the award.

And what better way to do that than to call in some of Tampa’s finest to make him think there’s a big suspicious object in his car?

I mean, they could have given him a Ruth’s Chris gift card, but that works too!

There’s nothing like your goalkeeper breaking into a sweat before you leave, thinking his car is about to explode: “No, bro. Congratulations!”

My favorite part was when Vasilevskiy said he was relieved to learn that nothing was wrong and he wouldn’t have to deal with the insurance company.

I felt it. I think we’ve all felt it.

Congratulations to Vasilevskiy. What a year it’s been. One that included a fight at an outdoor game against Vezina candidate Jeremy Swayman. No other Vezina winner can say that.

But where do you go from here? The only thing more extreme would be to go for something like “Scare Tactics”, another hidden camera prank show.

Maybe they make him think he was abducted by aliens or that Bigfoot smashed his mailbox.

So what happens if an actual police incident occurs?

He saw a safe environment and a bomb disposal robot and said, “Okay, guys, what did I win this time?” You don’t want him to say.
