U.S. Consulate in Toronto fired upon for the second time this year

A gunman opened fire at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto on Monday, marking the second time the building has opened fire this year, according to authorities.

While a single bullet casing was found at the scene, there was damage to the facade of the building.

It was stated that there were no injuries in the incident.

“The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Canada remain open and operating normally, although some routine U.S. citizen services in Toronto are being rescheduled,” the consulate said in a statement. he said.

Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said the shooting was followed by a high-speed chase that lasted an hour. However, no arrests were made and Barredo vowed to continue searching for those involved.

“We will approach this investigation with great seriousness,” Barredo said at a press conference. “We will bring those responsible for this incident to justice.”

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the attack a “brazen attack.”

“I want to say this to the person or people responsible, we will catch you,” he said.

This is the second attack targeting the US Consulate this year; The first was on March 10, when two suspects allegedly fired multiple shots into the building before driving away in a stolen vehicle.

Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, 18, and Zara Jabbi, 19, were arrested last month and charged with multiple felonies in connection with the March shooting. The allegations have not been tested in court.

There has been a police presence at the consulate since the first attack.

Barredo said a patrol car had its lights on in front of the consulate at the time of the attack. There were also two security guards in the building.

Last month, police said they believed several shootings, including the one in March, may be linked to “multi-layered” gun-for-hire networks that have also targeted Toronto synagogues.

Two popular Jewish-owned bakeries were targeted in shootings over the weekend.

Barredo said police did not rule out a connection between Monday’s consulate attack and the attacks on the bakeries. The reason for the consulate attack is being investigated.

“Investigators will follow the evidence wherever it leads,” he said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was “disgusted” by the recent violence in Toronto.

“I am completely disgusted by the shootings and vandalism that have occurred in Toronto over the past few days, including at two Jewish-owned businesses near the US Consulate over the weekend,” he said on X. “In all cases, active police investigations are ongoing. I expect all those responsible to be found, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
