Amid prevailing pressure on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply globally in the backdrop of West Asian conflict, the Center has reduced the number of subsidized refills available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) from nine cylinders per year to four cylinders.
Although there is no confirmation of when the restriction was officially initiated, it was announced in a press release on Sunday, June 7, 2026 regarding the domestic LPG price increase.
In the second increase since the beginning of the conflict in West Asia, prices of domestic LPG cylinders were increased by ₹29 on Sunday, taking the cumulative increase in two revisions to ₹89.
Under the PMUY scheme, the government provides a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to nine refills per year.
Currently, a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder costs ₹942 in Delhi. With an additional subsidy of ₹300 under the central scheme, beneficiaries pay ₹642 per cylinder.
Responding to concerns over reduction in subsidized refills, Union Petroleum Ministry Additional Secretary Praveen Khanooja said: “Whether we are a PMUY or a non-PMUY consumer, I get a cylinder that costs ₹1,600 [adhering to international pricing dynamics]942 Indian rupees (which is also an indirect subsidy),” he says, adding, “On top of that, PMUY consumers get ₹300 more, so they get ₹1,000.” [subsidy on every cylinder].”
He also said that the average consumption among PMU beneficiaries was “about four to five cylinders per year”, largely matching the revised provision.
The effective price of a PMUY cylinder priced at 642 Indian rupees is offered at a 60% discount compared to current international LPG prices, while a non-PMUY cylinder priced at 942 Indian rupees is offered at a 45% discount, the government said.
The PMUY scheme has provided around 10.55 crore LPG connections as of May 26 this year.
