A resident helping them told Sky News one family was ‘really frightened’ after protesters broke into their home and tried to throw fireworks.

The woman, who did not want to give her name, said people were trying to evict a man, his wife and teenage daughter from their home in the Shankill Road area.

“I could see them all coming into the house,” he said. “I don’t know how I did it, but I stopped each of them from going to the bedroom.”

The woman added that the family looked “really, really scared.”

He continued: “I just said, come out with me, I’ll help you, come with me… I went out with them and saw people looking at me.”

He then shouted at demonstrators that the family was not involved in Monday night’s attack.

“We kept walking and walked out of the street with them and rounded the corner.”

The woman said she believed “something very bad would have definitely happened” if she had not intervened.

“I think they were going to get beaten pretty hard,” he said. “To be honest, I’m scared to think of what will happen.”

He said he had been thinking all day about Monday’s attack and how it highlighted the riots in Northern Ireland last year.

“What do you think will happen and what is the worst thing that could happen?” he said.

“I don’t know, but when I saw them walking into that house, I knew something really bad was going to happen to them because they were strangers. I was the only one there who actually stopped it.”
