Philadelphia police release video of suspects in Penn State student murder

Philadelphia police have released video of two suspects wanted in the investigation into the murder of a Pennsylvania State University student returning home from an NBA Finals viewing party.
Philadelphia The Police Department released the video after 22-year-old Billy Schmidt was killed in an armed robbery attempt around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Officers found the college student with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.
Police released video of two suspects in Schmidt’s murder and armed robbery Wednesday night, saying the two threw away their T-shirts and masks in the area of 22nd and Porter streets.

The shooter was described by police as a Black male, between 6-foot-10 and 5-foot-7, “wearing all dark (black) clothing and a light gray camouflage colored face mask.” Authorities said this man was armed with a handgun.

The second suspect was described by police as 5-foot-11, braided, and “wearing a light gray, custom-designed “KONFUSED” branded hooded sweatshirt with three skulls on the front and crossbones with a jeweled halo over each skull.”

Investigators said Schmidt was returning home after watching the NBA Finals with friends when he was robbed around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
Previously released surveillance videos show Schmidt saying “Give me my phone” while chasing the suspects. A phone was seen being thrown to the ground, followed seconds later by a gunshot.

Schmidt was a student studying journalism at Penn State World Campus and was due to graduate in December.
His father, Bill Schmidt, said in an interview with Fox News that he found his son’s phone at the scene.

“I found the phone on the 19th. Then I called the police. I didn’t realize I touched it,” he said. “They’re trying to get DNA, and there’s a fingerprint on the phone, but they don’t know if it’s mine, or Billy’s, or the person who threw it. But they’re trying to get DNA from the phone.”
“I hope they find these animals and put them in cages for the rest of their lives,” said Anna Schmidt, Billy Schmidt’s sister.

“They deserve to spend the rest of their lives in prison for taking my brother away from me. And I don’t think anyone will understand the pain they’ve caused. They’re like animals for doing this to him. He was unarmed. And all this for a phone call? It doesn’t make sense,” he said.
The Philadelphia Police Department is asking anyone with information about the suspects to call 215-686-3334/3335 and is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
