Assam chief minister Chief Minister flags off international consignment of GI-tagged Tezpur litchis to Singapore

Guwahati: In a significant step towards increasing the footprint of Assam’s rich horticultural products in international markets, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ceremonially flagged off the export of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged lychees from Tezpur at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport today.

The export of 500 kilograms of the famous ‘Piyaji’ variety of lychee to Singapore marks the beginning of a new chapter for Assam’s farming community. Following the successful export of Assam’s GI-tagged lychees to Dubai recently, the opening of the Singapore market reflects the growing international demand for the State’s premium agricultural products. This achievement is also a result of the State Government’s continuous efforts to strengthen market linkages, value chains and export infrastructure.

Speaking to media persons after the event, the Prime Minister said that Tezpur lychees have managed to gain a place in international markets in the last few years. He noted that a few days ago, 2,000 kilograms of lychees were exported to Dubai through the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The 500 kilogram shipment, which departed today, will be transported to Singapore by Druk Air plane departing from Bhutan via Guwahati. He also informed that the Singapore High Commissioner has already expressed interest in procuring an additional 500 kilograms of Tezpur lychees.

The Prime Minister observed that with proper planning and sustained efforts, Assam can export many of its distinctive agricultural products such as litchis, kaji nemu and bhut jolokia to international markets.

He argued that even products such as jackfruit could find a place abroad. However, he emphasized that exports must strictly adhere to prescribed standards regarding fertilizer use and consistency between production practices and the final product. He also noted that Assam possesses considerable potential in the cultivation and export of ginger and stated that the Government would make special efforts to increase exports of agricultural produce in the coming years.

Highlighting the limitations in current production, the Prime Minister said Tezpur lychees are currently harvested from only around 3,000 trees. As there is strong demand for the fruit in Assam and other parts of India, it was not possible to export larger quantities this year despite increasing international demand. He added that he recently sent Tezpur litchis to the Prime Minister and many other Union Ministers, all of whom highly appreciated the quality and taste of the fruit.
Expressing optimism about the future, the Chief Minister said the export initiative will inspire farmers across the state and encourage increased cultivation of lychee in the coming years. He reiterated the Government of Assam’s commitment to create new global opportunities for farmers, increase their income and showcase the State’s best agricultural products on the world stage.
