A Biden-appointed federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore exhibits and other materials at national parks highlighting slavery, climate change and other left-wing ideology after they were removed under a directive targeting displays deemed derogatory to America.
U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley in Massachusetts, who was appointed to the federal bench in 2021 by former President Joe Biden, issued a preliminary injunction Friday requiring the administration to roll back the changes and pause further impeachments due to legal challenges.
The move comes amid America 250 celebrations that will escalate on July 4th.
In a statement, the Interior Department called Kelley a “liberal activist judge” and said it was reviewing options to appeal the removal of what Secretary Doug Burgum rebuked as “inappropriate partisan ideology.”

Trump’s March 27, 2025 executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity in American History” was intended to restore American heritage to national parks and monuments that were “altered to perpetuate a false reconstruction of American history” after the race riots of 2020; this could ultimately help fuel Biden’s election.
Trump ordered the Department of the Interior to “take appropriate and consistent lawful action” to ensure that all statements and depictions of the U.S. government “do not inappropriately disparage Americans, past or living”; instead “focus on the greatness” of America.
While Kelley wrote that the plaintiffs showed that the administration’s actions amounted to “rewriting the Nation’s history with a white pen,” Trump said he issued this order due to the “incorrect reconstruction” of US history under Biden, the president who appointed him.

According to Kelley, eliminating insults towards Americans and emphasizing the greatness of the United States set a “dangerous precedent for censorship and sanitization.”

The judge also ordered the administration to submit weekly status reports detailing progress in repairing the affected materials.
Among the materials removed by Burgum’s Interior were an exhibit at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park depicting the nation’s first president, George Washington, taking ownership of enslaved people and signs at Fort Sumter in South Carolina detailing climate threats.

“Under the guise of promoting American pride, this administration seeks to share a limited history by ordering the removal of all signs, exhibits, and interpretive exhibits in National Parks that do not fit its preferred narrative, thereby telling half-truths,” Kelley said. he wrote.
Trump signed the executive order to work to “restore truth and sanity to American history” in the nation’s museums, parks and landmarks. Burgum then ordered the removal of what he called “inappropriate partisan ideology” from museums, monuments, landmarks, and other public exhibits under federal control.

Other changes condemned by left-wing ideologues included the removal of a sign at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona that featured a picture of a visitor carrying a Pride flag and the removal of films about labor history at Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts.
“What we were left with, like almost every other Cabinet agency, was a complete mess of the Biden administration,” Burgum told Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany on “Saturday in America” and promised to “clean up the mess that was left to us.”

“They were doing everything from climate extremism to DEI to ESG, and they were doing it all against what the American people voted for and what President Trump promised the American people we would do.”
