Teenage boy arrested on suspicion of murder after girl, 14, found dead in South Wales

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a missing 14-year-old girl was found in South Wales on Monday evening.
The girl, named only as Lilly by Gwent Police, was found in the Duffryn Park area of Blaina at around 10.10pm on Monday.
Lilly had previously been reported missing and was last seen in High Street, Blaina, at around 6.50pm on Saturday, June 20.
The brunette teenager was wearing a long black dress and black sandals at the time.
Gwent Police said a 14-year-old boy from the Blaenau Gwent area was arrested and remains in custody on suspicion of murder.
Police added that the incident had been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) “in line with normal procedures”.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas said: “We continue to have a significant police presence in the area and understand the concern within our communities at this time.
“Our investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and there is currently a person in police custody being questioned.
“I would ask anyone with information to please come forward and speak to us, you can do this in person or contact us through the normal channels.
“I would also encourage people not to speculate online as this is a live investigation and such comments could impact our ability to bring to justice anyone found to have committed a crime.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101, 2600197059 or via social media or online.
The independent charity Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously.
Following the discovery of the body, parts of Pilgrims Park, adjacent to the A467 in Blaina, were cordoned off.
Flowers were left near the scene by citizens.
Niamh Salkeld, Plaid Cymru Senedd member for Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni, said: “I am deeply saddened by this tragic news.
“My thoughts are with Lilly’s family, friends and loved ones during what must be an unimaginably difficult time.
“This news will shock communities in Blaenau Gwent, particularly those in Blaina and those who knew Lilly personally.

“I know many people will struggle to come to terms with what is happening.
“Whilst Gwent Police continue to investigate, I would encourage anyone with information that could assist their investigation to come forward and contact them.”
Community councilor Lisa Winnett said: “This is devastating news, thoughts and prayers are with the family at this unimaginable time.
“Our pastor at St. Peter’s Church, Blaina, Liane Chalmers, opened the doors to anyone in the community who wanted to light a candle for Lilly, write in the condolence book or simply chat with the clergy and have a cup of tea after this devastating news.”
Prior to the discovery, Lilly’s family had appealed on social media for her to return home and had also organized searches in the local area.
A relative shared: “Lilly, please come home girl, I promise you, no matter how or why, you are not in trouble, we just want you home.
“Wherever you are, find the nearest police station. No questions asked, you’re not in trouble. We just love you and want you to be home.”
