Guwahati students under lens for AI-altered images of schoolgirls, teachers

GUWAHATI
The Crime Branch of Assam Police has started investigating a case involving some students of two Guwahati-based private schools who spread digitally altered images of 64 girl students and teachers on social media for a fee.
Police said a case was registered with the Crime Branch following allegations that at least two students created obscene content and sold pictures of their female classmates and teachers for ₹50 and ₹100.
“We have recorded the statements of principals, counselors and students involved in spreading obscene content,” Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain told reporters.
Mr. Jain said the person who exposed the deepfake case has been included in the ongoing investigation.
According to reporters, the accused students created obscene content and offered it for sale on the Telegram application.
On Friday, June 12, 2026, one of the schools suspended the students behind the incident and referred the matter to the Child Abuse Monitoring Committee and other relevant panels.
In a statement, the school said it has a zero-tolerance policy against cyber abuse, bullying, harassment, misuse of digital platforms and any behavior that may adversely affect the welfare of students and staff.
The school also urged all students and parents to refrain from spreading unverified information or spreading rumours.
