Trump’s UFC birthday bash was a bloody, on-brand affair

WASHINGTON – Call it the great Donald J. Trump, a Vegas-meets-White House extravaganza at dusk.

Seated beneath the “Claw,” a 25-foot arch adorned with twinkling stars and string lights that looms over a Coliseum-style arena on the South Lawn of the White House, the president spent the evening of June 14 on his 80th birthday with a series of concerts. Trump sat ringside, flanked by the First Lady, next to the eight-sided fighting arena known as the Octagon. Melania Trump and UFC CEO Dana White.

The high-octane event, described by historians as unprecedented, coincided not only with Trump’s birthday but also with Flag Day and was billed as part of the 2017 event. Celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

As Trump and White walked from the Oval Office to the arena for the first time, where there were approximately 4,000 people, the crowd, including many members of the Trump family; Business leaders like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Paramount Skydance’s David Ellison; Cabinet secretaries; and U.S. soldiers cheered. Military jets flew over the White House during the national anthem.

A violent sport, a boxing president

Michael Chandler waits in the Grand Foyer of the White House ahead of his lightweight bout against Brazilian Mauricio Ruffy during UFC Freedom 250.

The first of seven fights featured Brazilian Diego Lopes against American Steve Garcia. The Brazilian won the fight and climbed the Octagon fence in victory. The crowd went crazy. The images of warriors warming up at the White House and wandering around the Truman balcony, many draped in American flags, were an unusual spectacle indeed.

But for Trump, it was about the brand.

This is, after all, a president who defiantly raised his fist in the air, blood dripping down his face, and chanted, “Fight, fight, fight,” in the immediate aftermath of an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024. It has since become a rallying cry for his supporters, and a portrait capturing the scene is now prominently displayed in the White House.

This brutal combat sport reflects Trump’s own brand of scrappy, take-no-prisoners politics. He called people who opposed him bad names and openly called for the arrest and prosecution of judges and prosecutors.

After defeating American fighter Kyle Daukaus Bo Nickal He praised the president.

“I have to thank you President Trump “For making this happen,” Nickal credited White in an interview inside the Octagon, adding that Trump was “a special person.” Trump appeared to enjoy the praise.

Critics say Trump is enriching himself

While Trump’s critics argue the incident was undignified or unbecoming of the White House, these are questions of subjective taste, said Jeffrey Engel, founding director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

What bothers Engel is that the president is profiting from this. He noted that the president’s trust purchased $15,000 to $50,000 worth of shares in TKO Group Holdings Inc, the parent company of the UFC, in March.

“I think what is indisputable is that the President of the United States is using the White House and the White House lawn to make money for himself,” he said. “We’re seeing major multinational corporations literally putting their logos in the television line of sight of the White House.”

The cage featured ads for Crypto.com and Scotts Miracle-Gro, as well as other brands, including Trump’s Truth Social platform.

Barbara Res, a former vice president of the Trump Organization who oversaw the construction, said she was surprised that Trump even celebrated his birthday.

“He hates his birthday,” she said, recalling an incident in the late 1980s when some of Trump’s female staffers decided to throw him a surprise birthday party.

“They had a cake made to look like a record,” said Res, who worked on major projects such as New York’s Trump Tower in the 1980s.

“He wanted it to be over very quickly,” he said. “He hated it when people took time off.”

He says the only reason Trump planned this extravaganza was to “make money for himself.”

“He thinks it will make him look like an important man,” he said.

But for Trump’s base and those who attended the event, the event was a show of strength and patriotism.

“USA! USA! USA!” It echoed in the Community Center and its surroundings.
