Mbappe Becomes France’s Record Scorer With Two Goals at FIFA World Cup 2026

East Rutherford: France captain Kylian Mbappe became his country’s all-time top scorer with his double against Senegal in the World Cup on Tuesday, surpassing Olivier Giroud’s 57 goals.

Playing in France’s opening match at the New York New Jersey Stadium, Mbappe passed the ball over the goalkeeper in the 66th minute and scored his 58th international goal with a scream during the stoppage time of the second half.

Giroud, who works as an expert at the BBC, said, “Congratulations Kylian. You did it. I’m really happy for him.”

Real Madrid striker Mbappe, 27, was under extraordinary scrutiny heading into the World Cup but came back to life in the second half as France defeated Senegal 3-1 in Group I.

Giroud said that Mbappe promised him his jersey in the match.

France will play Iraq in Philadelphia on Monday before facing Norway in their final group match on June 26.
