Supergirl Debuts to Mixed Reviews; but Milly Alcock, Jason Momoa Garner Aclaim

Supergirl, the second movie in James Gunn’s newly shot DC Universe, has received initial reactions and criticism. The superheroine is based on the acclaimed comic book series Woman of Tomorrow and will be played by House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film sparked polarized opinions, but the one thing that united them was Alcock’s powerful interpretation of Supergirl.
Alcock became the star of the show, giving a spectacular performance as Kara Zor-El. Reviews so far have praised the raw portrayal of Supergirl, staying true to the character’s “messiness” throughout her complex nature. Film critic David Crow wrote of X: “Milly Alcock absolutely owns the role and will change our idea of Supergirl forever.”
Audiences were also impressed that Supergirl was portrayed as her own character and not as a side piece of being Superman’s cousin; This sets this version of Supergirl apart from her predecessors. Critic Germain Lussier shared at
The film also moves away from being, as critic Mike Ryan said in X, “a superhero space movie with needle-drops like Guardians of the Galaxy and Superman.” The tone and overall atmosphere are Road Warrior-like, and viewers liken Supergirl to Mad Max, “with dirty worlds, nasty villains, and a self-destructive hero.”
Another standout performance is Jason Momoa’s. His performance as fan-favorite galactic hunter Lobo stole the show with his “trademark chaotic charm.”
While Kara and Lobo’s performances stood out, some aspects of the film were subject to heavy criticism. Film and TV critic Tessa Smith shared on Discussing Film said, “The movie around him (Alcock) takes too long to get into gear and never quite matches his energy.”
Supergirl follows up on last summer’s David Corenswet-starring Gunn blockbuster “Superman,” which opened to a staggering $618 million worldwide. The stakes are high for Supergirl, and we hope its high-octane action and emotional journey will draw viewers in.
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26.
