Joy Behar defends treating JD Vance like a ‘human being’ on ‘The View’

“The View” co-hosts criticized Joy Behar on Friday for gracious hosting of Vice President J.D. Vance during an appearance on the liberal daytime talk show on Tuesday, with Vance arguing that she was merely following the example of the late Barbara Walters.
“As in JD. He was here the other day,” Behar said as the panel reviewed the interview with Vance. “I respect the office. I believe in the importance of crossing the aisle. I do.”
A few minutes later, co-host Sunny Hostin asked, “But I want to know, why were you so in love with J.D. Vance?” he asked.
“I wasn’t in love. I’m not in love with him, and I’m not in love with this administration,” Behar replied.

At a news conference Wednesday, Vance addressed doubts about his abilities in “hostile, risky negotiations” with Iran, joking that his appearance on “The View” was all the proof anyone needed.
“I would like to point out to these progressive critics that I spent over an hour on ‘The View’ just two days ago, so I really have a lot of experience in very adversarial negotiations,” he joked. “Look, Joy Behar is much stronger than the Iranians, and she and I are very good friends now.”
A clip of the moment was played on “The View” Friday, drawing laughter from viewers and hosts alike. Host Sunny Hostin asked: “What!? Were we harder to deal with than the Iranian government?” he asked.
As host Ana Navarro responded, Behar replied, “I guess he’s being funny,” and wished Behar was the one negotiating with the Iranian government.

“He came strategically prepared to disarm us with kindness. He came in as friendly, easy to laugh and very kind,” Navarro said, referring to Vance. He then told Behar, “It worked on you. It didn’t work on me.”
“It didn’t work for me either,” Hostin added.
“It ‘didn’t work’ on me,” Behar said, clearly uncomfortable with being accused of being persuaded. “It didn’t happen. I respect the duty. I’m a civilized person, and when someone comes on my show, you treat them like a human being.”
“Barbara Walters said that,” Hostin admitted.
“I trained under Barbara Walters,” Behar said as she and Hostin talked about the late creator and founder of “The View.”
Hostin recalled Walters giving this advice when he first came on the show as a guest host years ago: “When someone comes to your house, be nice to them. That’s what he told me.”

Although some of the hosts were skeptical about Vance’s political shifts over the years, Behar defended him: “You know what? I believe people are redeemable. I remember him writing ‘Hillbilly Elegy.’ He grew up poor. It was a really good book. He wasn’t the person he is now. I agree with that, maybe it will come back to this. Who knows? I can only hope!”

Behar confirmed during a commercial break Tuesday that she told Vance he had a good vibe “for a Republican” and suggested he run for president.
