The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) General Assembly has appointed Ministry of Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal as the next deputy chairman of the global anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing watchdog for the period 2026-2027.

“Members approved the priorities of the FATF under the new UK chairmanship and appointed Mr Vivek Aggarwal of India as the next vice-president of the FATF (July 2026-June 2027),” a FATF statement said.

Mr Aggarwal will replace Giles Thomson, who has served as FATF deputy chairman since 1 July 2025.

Mr. Aggarwal, currently Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, headed India’s delegation to the FATF. He led a multidisciplinary team in India’s FATF Mutual Review process.

His election is seen as a significant development for India’s role in global financial governance and efforts to strengthen international cooperation on anti-money laundering, combating terrorist financing and illicit financial flows.
