The Met Office has revealed exactly when a severe 38-degree heatwave will blast the UK, with tens of millions of Britons facing extreme heat warnings. The UK’s national weather service has extended its extreme heat warning from an initial two-day yellow heat warning to now a four-day period.
A second warning was issued from midnight on Wednesday 24 June until 23.59 on Thursday 25 June; Directly after another warning, a second warning was issued between 01.00 and 23.59 from Monday 22 June to Tuesday 23 June. According to the information obtained by forecasters, temperatures are expected to rise up to a scorching 38 degrees at times. The Met Office said: “Hot and humid weather is expected to persist throughout midweek, with exceptionally warm temperatures both day and night. “Adverse health impacts are likely to be experienced across the population, including but not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, which could potentially lead to serious illness or life-threatening conditions.
“Significant changes to working practices and daily routines will likely be required. Heat-sensitive systems and equipment are likely to fail, as well as loss of power and disruption of other essential services such as water, electricity, gas or mobile phone services.”
“Road delays and road closures, rail and air transport delays and cancellations are possible and have the potential to cause significant welfare issues for those experiencing even moderate delays.”
“Overall very warm weather is likely to persist in the highlighted area through at least Thursday, although significant variation from place to place and from day to day is likely,” the warning states.
“Daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius, with the hottest areas potentially peaking at around 38 degrees Celsius.”
The Met Office added that overnight temperatures were “unlikely” to fall much lower than the highest levels, with some places likely to fall below 20 to 21C. These high temperatures will be accompanied by high humidity.
“Cooler conditions may begin to develop in the west after this period, but confidence is low.”
